Protecting Your Business from Cyber Security Issues During the Holidays

Wednesday, October 17th, 2018

cyber security

While the holidays are referred to as “the most wonderful time of the year,” they are also known for being prime time for cyber security issues. Since consumers are focused on the bustle of the season and business owners are busy working hard meeting customer demand, cyber security often falls by the wayside.

The Rise of Holiday Hacking

A 2017 study found that financial malware correlated with cyber security breaches increased almost 25% during the holiday season. Over the course of the 2016 holiday season, cyber thieves used about 30 types of banking Trojans that contributed to a whopping $6.9 billion in online payment frauds. With cyber security risks growing every year, every business owner should take steps to protect their business and customers during the holidays.

The Most Common Holiday Attacks

The most common threats during the holiday season include:

  • Phishing campaigns, where you will receive emails disguised as authentic communications from vendors or customers looking to capture passwords and personal information or install dangerous software on your system
  • Skimmers placed on your POS terminals that will read the card number and pin code when customers pay with a credit or debit card
  • DDoS, or distributed denial of service, attacks, where a hacker will try to make your website unavailable to customers by disrupting the services of the host connected to the internet. While this type of attack might not compromise any personal or sensitive information, downtime on your website could cost you thousands in sales over the holiday season

Preparing for Cyber Security Attacks Around the Holidays

  • Schedule a check-up with Teltek to make sure that your current IT systems are secure and properly backing everything up. Now is the time to install patches, update security systems and schedule regular back-ups, because you won’t have time to do so soon!
  • Continuously monitor your business with security systems to make sure that nothing is off. With Teltek’s support, you can have your back end monitored around the clock for attempted breaches or DDoS attacks.
  • Never leave anything to chance. Don’t try to protect your business and customers from data breaches and cyber security attacks alone.

The Value of Telecommunications Consulting

Wednesday, September 5th, 2018

telecommunications consulting

How thought out is your telecommunications strategy? Whenever you’re considering investing in a new communications solution or changing the way you do things now, it’s important to do so with expert help. Teltek has decades of experience in telecommunications consulting, and we can assist your business if you’re starting from scratch or looking to maximize productivity and minimize spending.

Why Should You Hire a Consultant?

Telecommunications consulting is the best way to determine if you’re getting the right price for the right telecommunications system. Could you benefit from different services or another package? Are you overpaying for a package that currently under-delivers? A telecommunications consultant can audit your current infrastructure, find areas for improvement and make concrete suggestions.

A skilled consultant also has a wealth of experience with the acquisitions process. It can be hard to go about getting bids from qualified providers if you don’t know where to start. A telecom consultant can take care of proposal creation, distribution, bidding and administration so that you don’t need to worry about what’s going on behind the scenes.

A consultant is also an invaluable ally during the contract negotiation process. Your consultant knows industry terminology, pricing and service standards better than anyone else, so having a consultant by your side is like bringing an interpreter with you to a negotiation in a foreign language. You can’t get the best deal if you don’t understand the terminology!

Our Consulting Process

We start by sending one of our certified engineers to complete an on-site inspection. Our engineer will complete a thorough inspection and analysis of your needs. We also take into consideration environmental factors and preferences. Once we have gathered as much information as we can about your current telecommunications system, we will complete a Request for Proposals (RFP) and allow bids.

Every response to your business’s RFP will be analyzed to take into account all of the following and more:

  • Features
  • Benefits
  • Warranties and service plans
  • Complexity of the solution
  • Ease of use
  • Serviceability
  • Maintenance requirements
  • Payment options
  • Integration capabilities
  • Inclusiveness of proposal
  • Strength of brand
  • Interconnect
  • Price

All potential RFP candidates that seem like a good fit will be interviewed by our team and your team so that you can make the most informed decision possible. Once you choose your preferred vendor, we can manage the implementation process through our project management services.

The Basics of Expense Management

Wednesday, August 1st, 2018

shutterstock_705804559

If you’re like many small business owners, the thought of managing your technology expenses is headache-inducing. However, expense management is growing in importance as businesses waste thousands every year on technology and telecommunications. One study found that almost 80% of telephone and internet bills have errors. Those errors add up to millions of dollars lost by businesses of every size. Expense management services from Teltek can keep your prices reasonable.

How Can Expense Management Help Your Business?

Teltek can negotiate rates and handle expense management for any of the following services or products:

  • Cable
  • FiOS
  • Hosted PBX
  • IP VPN
  • Broadband
  • Internet
  • Local and Long-Distance Phone
  • MPLS
  • P2P (Point-to-Point)
  • VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
  • Wireless Voice and Data

The Expense Management Process

We will start by examining your existing telecommunications bills and look for places where the amount you’re paying could be lowered, or where your service could be adjusted to meet your needs better. Once we complete our examination, we will develop a 3-5 year plan for your business that includes your voice and data hardware, and that takes into account your plans.

Once the plan has been created, Teltek will obtain quotes from 2-4 service providers near your business. You will always have the final say in the procurement process and approve the rate and upgrades or downgrades in the service. Across the board, our customers save 15-45% on telecommunications and technology expenses when they utilize our expense management services.

Once you accept a proposal, Teltek will handle setting up the service and invoicing you. Instead of sorting through a big stack of bills once a month, we will provide you with an easy to understand invoice once a month. Our bills explain what you owe and the services that you are receiving, and only have one due date to remember.

Why Teltek?

Teltek has decades of experience working with telecommunications companies and technology providers, so every customer who partners with us benefits from our long-term partnerships.

3 Myths About Cloud Computing

Wednesday, February 7th, 2018

Cloud-Computing

Cloud computing has been a popular technology solution for businesses of every size for many years, but some businesses remain stubborn holdouts as a result of misinformation. Is your business missing out on the potential of cloud computing because of one of these three myths?

Myth: Cloud Computing is Not Secure

In reality, cloud security is probably tighter than your existing security system. As threats evolve, cloud technology and software platforms are continuously updated to protect data from falling into the wrong hands. Cloud vendors use data encryption and rigorous security protocols to protect businesses. Most small businesses do not independently use such updated, high security standards.

Myth: Moving to the Cloud Will Take Too Long

Depending on the size of your business, migrating your documents and data to the cloud could take as little as one week! Teltek has a great deal of expertise in moving businesses into the cloud, so we can manage every aspect of migration for a seamless transition. Once your data and applications have been moved over, we can train key employees in how to operate the new systems properly.

Myth: Cloud Computing Costs Too Much

Teltek works with business owners who fall victim to this myth on a daily basis! Cloud computing is not only inexpensive, but it’s also often less expensive than traditional computing. You do not need to invest a great deal into purchasing and installing new equipment or software. You also won’t need to worry about maintenance, security systems, power or cooling for your cloud system. Instead, you will experience a simple and valuable storage solution that offers all of the features you need without a steep cost.

Explore Cloud Computing with Teltek

If you are curious about how cloud computing could improve the way you do business, contact Teltek today for a free consultation at 1-866-9-TELTEK or 410-552-6580.

3 Signs Your Business Should Invest in Managed IT Services

Thursday, February 1st, 2018

IT

Are you feeling overwhelmed at the thought of handling your small business’s information technology and data security needs on your own? Managed IT services are a wonderful way to take your business to the next level while removing another set of tasks off of your already-full plate. If you have noticed any of the following signs in your business, it’s time to give Teltek a call to learn about how managed IT services could help you.

You Don’t Know if Your Back-Up Plan is Reliable (or How to Actually Use it)

What is your current back-up plan? If you are not currently sure how strong your back-up plan is and whether or not it will be able to protect you in the event of an emergency, you need managed IT services now. Many small businesses that attempt to save money by self-managing their IT end up paying for it tenfold in the event of an emergency. A server crash as a result of malware or improper maintenance can mean thousands of dollars in lost revenue and a permanently-damaged reputation.

You Don’t Know Your Liability for a Data Breach or Hack

Do you handle sensitive customer information, like personal details and credit card numbers? Regardless of the size of your business, you have a responsibility to secure customer information. If you do not have steps in place to protect that information, you need a managed IT services provider who can secure your network. Hackers and thieves are always looking for new ways to access information. Without someone working to protect it 24/7, like Teltek, you put your customers at risk.

You Are Spending Too Much Time on IT

Small and medium-sized businesses do not typically need a dedicated IT staff member. If you are spending a great deal of time you should be using elsewhere to install software updates, complete virus scans and read up on the latest IT news, you should outsource your IT to a managed services provider. We work to enhance and protect businesses like yours every day, and it’s our specialty. Give yourself the time to tackle your specialty—running your business.

Make the Switch to Managed IT Services

Why Are Antivirus and Malware Protection So Important for Your 2018 Security?

Wednesday, January 10th, 2018

malware

2017 was a notable year in the network security world thanks to numerous high-profile viruses and malware variants that compromised major healthcare systems and thousands of companies. 2018 is shaping up to be no different, with multiple ransomware and malware variants on the horizon.

Notable 2017 Ransomware

Over the course of 2017, the following types of ransomware and malware wreaked havoc on numerous networks throughout the country:

  • WannaCry
  • NotPetya
  • Cerber
  • Locky

Are Any of These Viruses Coming Back?

Many industry leaders expect ransomware strains like WannaCry and NotPetya to be re-released in a slightly modified form to do more damage to networks throughout the country. Both of these types of ransomware were created using a stolen National Security Agency exploit called EternalBlue, which used a known vulnerability on computers running old versions of Windows to spread.

Predictions for 2018

Network security industry experts are predicting that ransomware and Ransomware as a Service (RaaS) will continue to spread. RaaS kits are available to any level of hacker, regardless of their technical knowledge and skill, which makes them a particularly dangerous possibility.

While computers and networks have been traditional targets for viruses, Android mobile devices are becoming increasingly at risk. WannaCry was found in multiple apps on Google Play. Google works its hardest to remove these apps, but the hackers are working just as hard to put out more apps and stay a step ahead. Security for your office’s mobile devices, like tablets and phones, is going to become more important in 2018.

Teltek Offers Top-of-the-Line Antivirus, Spam and Spyware Protection

Unfortunately, many of the businesses targeted by ransomware and malware attacks do not have a security strategy or know what to do when the worst happens. By partnering with an experienced network security partner like Teltek, you can rest assured that your security will be proactive and not reactive. We work hard every day to protect your network from the latest viruses and other security threats.

Could E-Rate Benefit Your Campus?

Friday, October 20th, 2017

tech

If you work in a school or library, there’s a good chance that you are already taking advantage of E-Rate. E-Rate, or the Schools and Libraries Program, is a federally-mandated program to make IT and telecommunications services less expensive for schools and libraries. Since 1997, E-Rate has been connecting these institutions to discounted internet, intranet and telecommunications services.

How Does the E-Rate Program Benefit Schools and Libraries?

If you are deemed eligible, you can receive discounts on category one services:

  • Telecommunications
  • Telecommunications services
  • Internet (T1, PRI, fiber and/or Ethernet)

You will also receive discounts on category two services:

  • Internal IT connections
  • Internal broadband services
  • Maintenance

Depending on your surrounding community, the discount might range from 20-90%. Areas with higher poverty and less access to information technology typically receive a higher discount, but the program is never free.

How Do You Enroll in E-Rate?

Your school or library should first submit a request for competitive bids for the E-Rate services you are interested in to the USAC. Your request will be posted on their website for vendors to view. Next, the vendors will submit bids to you for the service or equipment that you need. You can choose your vendor(s) and then submit an E-Rate application to the USAC. This application should list all of the things you want to purchase and their associated costs. If you qualify for coverage with E-Rate, the USAC will issue you a funding commitment.

E-Rate from Teltek

Teltek is a registered E-Rate vendor (SPIN number 830717), and we enjoy working with schools and libraries to strengthen their infrastructure and better meet the needs of patrons and the community.

Wireless Point to Point Bridges Will Change the Way Your Buildings Connect

Thursday, September 21st, 2017

buildings

If your business is on a campus with other buildings that need to use your wireless connection or you work over such a large area that it isn’t practical to run cable throughout to speed data transfer, wireless point to point bridges are a perfect solution.

The Basics

Wireless point to point bridges are an invaluable tool for connecting multiple buildings with seamless voice, video and data transfer. Depending on the wireless point to point bridge model you choose, you could share data without cabling within a radius up to five miles. Wireless point to point bridges work by mounting the included antennas, attaching them to Ethernet cables and placing them in a straight line across from each other. They do not need to be close to each other, as long as there is a line of sight between the two.

Added Benefits

Wireless point to point bridges are straightforward to set up and can solve the problem of sharing an internet connection where you cannot otherwise have a traditional broadband connection. They also allow for easier sharing between devices and can achieve the exact same speeds as those inside of your facility, even from a great distance away. Data transfers and file sharing are quick and seamless, and you won’t find yourself wasting time while files load when you are further away from the router. Wireless point to point bridges are an incredible solution for many business owners.

It’s Easier Than You Think

While wireless point to point bridges sound complicated to business owners who aren’t very tech-savvy, they are very easy to set up and use. The antennas are very forgiving, so if the point to point connection isn’t completely exact, they will still connect and provide you with a robust wireless connection. If you don’t have anywhere on ground-level where you can establish a line of sight, they can be mounted higher for a connection without noise.

Partner with Teltek

Teltek can have your wireless point to point bridge up and running quickly and easily. If you are ready to transform the connections on your business campus, contact us today.
