Girl On Wire – Have You Hugged An Emergency Communicator Today?

Monday, April 15th, 2013

Tax Day is not the only noteable event today. This week, April 14-20, 2013, is National Public Safety Telecommunications Week. The purpose of this designation is to recognize the men and women who answer and respond to emergency calls by delivering instructions to the callers and dispatching paramedics, police and fire personnel. These emergency communication professionals are the first ones contacted in times of crisis and it’s an extremely stressful and important job.

Emergency communication workers include calltakers, dispatchers and the technicians who maintain the radio and phone system equipment.

Teltek has very close ties to the Emergency Response industry. Our very own Chris Nicoli is a volunteer with the Sykesville Freedom District Fire Department and we helped the SFDFD by installing cabling and telephone and paging equipment in the new station when the building suffered a roof collapse and fire in 2010. Another one of our team members is a former police officer who would assist at the station’s call center when additional personnel was required.

The idea of dedicating a week to the men and women who serve as public safety telecommunicators was suggested by Patricia Anderson of the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office in 1981. The California agency celebrated their own holiday for the next three years before it started to spread across the country and was officially recognized by Congress in the early 1990s.

Many local agencies around the country will host tours of their facilities and celebrations to mark the occasion and honor the people you may never meet, but serve in these vital roles. It is hoped that this week will raise awareness and prompt thank you notes and commendation letters to the unsung heroes of emergency services.

As a telecommunications and IT company, Teltek salutes the men and women who answer and respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Thank you for your daily heroism!

I Spy: How To Protect Yourself From Spyware

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Spyware is malicious software that is designed to perform certain functions when it reaches your computer. It does this without your permission and the chaos it unleashes includes pilfering sensitive information, barraging you with pop-up windows and possibly crashing your computer. It’s called Spyware because it can be installed without the user’s knowledge and quietly collects information. Detecting and removing spyware can be a real challenge.

Since Teltek IT specializes in Spyware and Antivirus protection and elimination, we wanted to share some tips on preventing spyware from taking hold and what to do in the event of a spyware invasion.

The best ways to protect yourself from spyware are to make sure you have a reliable firewall installed, keep your software updated and only download content from sites you know are safe. If you use Internet Explorer for browsing, you can adjust the security settings to limit how much information will be accepted from a site. Finally and most importantly, make sure you install antispyware protection.

Barracuda, Norton, McAfee and other companies offer solutions for blocking spyware and many of these products feature automatic data backups, parental controls and identity protection. There is even social networking security for Twitter, Facebook and other programs that allow you to socialize safely.

So what action should you take if you are compromised by Spyware? Call Teltek! Removing spyware can be tricky, so let our IT experts scrub your system clean of that malicious malware and send those spies back to their evil secret headquarters.

Teltek Team Members Achieve A+ Certification!

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

Several executive and administrative members of Team Teltek recently achieved CompTIA A+ Certification! These dedicated Teltekians trained for 80+ hours over an 11 week period and had to pass two different exams to receive the certification.

A+ Certification is granted when an individual gains proficiency in the essential skills and knowledge needed to install, upgrade, repair, configure, troubleshoot, optimize and perform preventative maintenance of basic personal computer hardware and operating systems.

This is an outstanding achievement since these are not our technicians, who currently hold A+ and other technical certificates, but our executive and office support co-workers! Having these additional skills and knowledge allows Teltek to provide even better customer service to our IT and telecom clients.

Since 1997, Teltek has become an established resource for nearly 2,000 client’s telephone systems, voice and data cable installations, and carrier services. As a Microsoft Certified Partner and Dell Registered Partner, Teltek has the knowledge and resources necessary to keep your computer network and IT infrastructure current and functioning efficiently with the personalized service Teltek clients have grown to admire. With office locations in Baltimore and Westminster, Maryland, we serve clients across MD, DC and VA.

Let Teltek be your single source technology solutions provider. Call us today at 1.866.9.Teltek to find out why 2,000 repeat clients trust Teltek to maintain their critical business technology systems each and everyday. That’s the Teltek difference!

What Exactly Is Total Care Assurance?

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Teltek’s new IT Service offerings are part of the package we like to call Total Care Assurance. We thought it would be helpful to define what it means to Teltek so there’s no ambiguity about it.

Total Care Assurance is one-stop technology support for the systems your office relies upon to stay in contact with co-workers, clients and your strategic partners. It’s a multi-system approach that includes your phone systemcabling, voice & data carriers, network support, disaster recovery, etc.

This graphic displayed on our Total Care Assurance page sums it up best:

Teltek IT Services is at the center with all of the systems it supports radiating out. Think of it like this; Teltek is the sun and the various aspects of your technology are the planets. Does it make sense to leave the solar system for tech support? Not if it’s available locally and delivers consistent and expert upgrades and repairs with stellar customer service!

Our process begins with an in-depth analysis of your existing technology, future business plans and budget. Then we determine how frequently your business should have an onsite preventive maintenance visit. Next, primary and secondary technicians and project managers are assigned to you and we document the details of your network, settings and preferences. Finally, all systems and software are upgraded to a manageable level and your ongoing support begins.

Trust Teltek to manage all of your technology to eliminate confusion and save time and energy. For a free consultation, contact Teltek IT Services today!

A Fast Read On Quick Response Codes

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

QR Codes, those mysterious little blocks that remind me of a crossword puzzle background, are showing up everywhere lately. What are they doing here and what do they want?

The Quick Response code was designed by Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicles for Toyota during the manufacturing process. It’s actually an evolution of the bar code.

Also known as a two-dimensional (2D) code, these black and white squares have been widely used in Japan for the past decade. What makes it special is the fact that it can hold thousands more characters than a 1D bar code, which is limited to 20. The more information you ask a 2D code to store, the smaller the pixels will be. A QR Code can be scanned vertically or horizontally, unlike a standard UPC code.

When you scan a code, you are linked to information in the form of a text, phone number, web site, etc. To enable scanning, you must first install a QR Scanner app on your smartphone. You can find this by searching for “QR Scanner” and your model of smartphone in your browser. If your phone has a built-in camera, there should be a QR app available. YouTube has videos posted for how to scan and use QR Codes if you’d like to see a demonstration.

Enabling a QR Code is relatively easy and free of charge. You enter your information into a QR Code generator, found on many web sites and the code is created instantly. The QR Code at the top of this page was created by me in seconds on qrcode.kaywa.com. Many airlines are using these codes as a superfast boarding pass and I’m starting to see these on the back of business cards as well.

There is a downside to utilizing QR codes. Malicious QR codes can contain viruses and attack codes that could lead to a compromise of the information on your phone or computer, so you should only scan a code it if it links to a company or site you trust.

Speaking of companies you trust, Trust Teltek to assist with all of your technology needs.
